Collection Goals

I only recently decided what I wanted my collection to look like, and I have been collecting for about 5 years. I went through periods where I bought the most prized dolls, according to other people, and I felt empty. I didn’t have any connection to them, even if they were beautiful or I was “supposed” to like them best. So I got to thinking, “What do I love?” and for me that has always been Samantha. I decided to get clear and specific about what I wanted to see, what I wanted to hold, what I wanted to play with. Because collections are so very personal. They are a reflection of what you enjoy, what your passions are, and what you love. So I challenge you to get specific about what you want your collection to look like. Here are a few tips to get your started:

1 – Start with what you love. What brings a smile to your face when you think about it or see it?

2 – Dream bigger. Challenge your collection goals. I decided to primarily collect Samantha dolls, but my bigger dream is to find a Samantha for every year she was made by Pleasant Company.

3 – Try to tune out what you “should” want or what others want. Like I mentioned, collections are so personal. What you love and enjoy will be different than the next collector.

4 – Your collection should only bring you joy. If it ever stresses you out, pulls you into financial distress, or gives you any sadness, it’s not the right doll or collection piece for you. It really is that simple.

5 – Have fun! It’s not a race to find the best pieces as soon as possible. Enjoy spending time researching, discovering, and finding pieces that you love that’s within your budget.

6 – Get specific. This is an important one because it will keep you on track. What is your vision? Get detailed about your ideal collection item. It isn’t enough to say, “I want a Samantha doll.” When you think about it, what is your ideal Samantha doll? Your new focus may be a white bodied Samantha doll with original curls and mint in box, or you may want a doll you can fix up yourself. The choice is yours, just stay clear on what you want. This will prevent you from spending unnecessarily or bringing things into your collection that you will end up selling.

7 – Your collection will evolve. As your collection grows, your new focus may change, and that’s great! If you wanted one of every outfit and now you have it, you may decide to change your focus to finding earlier pieces or ones in better condition. Remember to be flexible and enjoy the process.

I hope this helps everyone to put together a collection that you can truly enjoy and love for years to come!

❤️, Jennifer
