I’m not totally a great photographer. I don’t know much about composition, light values, whatever, but I want to make great pictures of my dolls without spending a fortune. I found some very inexpensive 3′ x 5′ photography backdrops on eBay that I thought would be perfect for taking pictures of my dolls, making them look like they are in some great place instead of my basement. The problem was, how do I put these up?
Then I had an idea… why not use pipes to create my own homemade stand? I found some projects online, but none were doll sized. So here is what I came up with to make your own DIY photography backdrop stand for your own collection! I promise it’s not hard, and you’ll be up taking great pictures in no time!
Step 1
I got everything I needed at the hardware store and spent about $5 to put it all together.
You will need:
- Two 10-foot 3/4 inch PVC pipes
- Two 3/4-inch S x S Tee PVC connectors
- Two 3/4-inch 90-degree S x S Elbow PVC connectors
- Four 3/4-inch S end caps
- Two 2-inch clamps
When you are buying all these parts, make sure that they all have smooth interiors (not ridged like a screw).
Start by cutting the 10-foot pipes into several pieces. You will need to measure 3 pieces at 40 inches long each and 4 pieces measured to 12 inches each. Slip the end caps on one end of each 12-inch piece.
Start by connecting the 12-inch pieces together using the Tee connectors.
Then attach one of the 40-inch pieces to the empty pipe on the Tee connector. Do this for both pieces.
Next, slip on the elbows to each side of the remaining 40-inch piece. Try to make it as symmetrical as possible.
Finally, attach the elbow ends to the legs that you made in the previous step.
And that’s it! The finished product measures about 42″ by 42″. Use these simple 2-inch clamps to attach any muslin photography backdrop to the stand. This will fit 3′ x 5′ backdrops perfectly.
